Today FM’s Ray D’Arcy has admitted he feels “a little bit shook” after a run-in with car thieves at the weekend.
The DJ revealed his ordeal to listeners of the show this morning, saying that he was parking at a Dublin hotel for a meeting when he spotted a group of men in baseball hats with a screwdriver gathered around a car.
“In my head, I’m thinking they look a bit old. They look a bit long in the tooth to be wearing baseball hats. Anyway, I drove on, parked up the car and looked over my shoulder back at the car with the lads in the baseball hats looking a bit fidgety to see what they were up to. One of them had climbed out of that car and was in another car and obviously searching for goodies in the car,” he said.
D’Arcy said he was then faced with the dilemma of whether to tackle the men over their suspicious behaviour and decided to draw attention to the fact that he had noticed what they were up to, shouting “Oi, is that your car?”.
“I got no response, so I said it again: ‘Oi, is that your car?’ And, surprise, surprise, it wasn’t their car, so the man who is in the car climbed out, covered his head so I couldn’t see his face, got back into the other car and they left at speed.”
The quick-thinking radio star had taken the registration of the vehicle and gave it to staff at the hotel, admitting that he had found the experience “unsettling”.
