From humble beginnings with nylon backpacks to overseeing one of the biggest fashion houses in the world, Miuccia Prada has one interesting success story.

Miuccia had various academic achievements and a strong interest in politics when she took the helm of the family business in 1978.
Although she had little to do with fashion prior to this role, she soon showed that she was more than able for the task at hand.

1985 was the year Prada became a major player in the fashion game after Miuccia and her husband-to-be Patrizio Bertelli launched a range of handbags and backpacks.
The signature feature was the understated labelling and this was a sign of things to come for Prada’s chic and sophisticated style.

It is very important to note that Miuccia didn’t have any formal training and as proof of her talent, she launched a ready-to-wear line four years after the handbag range.
The success of Miuccia’s line quickly spiralled and Miu Miu was born in 1992.
Marketed as Prada’s younger (and less expensive) sister brand, Miu Miu quickly became a talking point with both critics and customers gushing about its energy and modernity.

Part of Prada’s success is due to the fact Miuccia and her team have never been afraid to try new things.
Rather than follow trends, Prada is somewhat of a trailblazer in the fashion world.
From the transparent raincoat that turned opaque when wet to the uber bright and colourful collection of Fall/Winter 2004/2005, Miuccia’s willingness to think outside the box has stood her in good stead.

One of her most recognised quotes is “my idea is always to avoid nostalgia” signifying her ability to look forward and seek new trends rather than following pre-existing ones.
Keira Knightley, Michelle Williams and Kerry Washington are just a few of the Hollywood leading ladies who opt for Prada on a regular basis.

Elle.com previously described Prada as the “thinking celebrity’s choice” and we’re in agreement.
