Red Carpet Hits & Misses – 71 Dresses from the 71st Golden Globes

All the hits and misses from the red carpet...

The 2014 Awards season kicked off in considerable style last night with the 71st annual Golden Globe awards. With Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the helm, the cream of Hollywood cheered as the finest movies and TV shows of the past year were deservedly rewarded.

You can check out everything that happened inside the room here, but the morning after the night before is really the perfect time to dissect the red carpet style, so we have 71 dresses from the 71st Golden Globes for you to check out, including some good, some bad, and some downright ugly. The Globes red carpet tends not to be as ‘safe’ as the Oscar one, and the leading ladies of Tinseltown are more experimental in choosing their gowns. It might not always be pretty, but it certainly makes for a more interesting show!

The good: Rising star Lupita Nyong’o was a knockout on the red carpet. The 12 Years A Slave star wore red Ralph Lauren with cape detailing and let the dress do the talking. Stunning. Kate Beckinsale dazzled in an embellished Zuhair Murad gown, and Lizzy Caplan gave off an old-school Hollywood glamour vibe in Emilio Pucci.

The bad: Sandra Bullock was a classic case of ‘when bad dresses happen to good people’. America’s sweetheart Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t feeling the love last night either, with her Dior dress failing to impress. Host Tiny Fey opted for a full-skirted floral gown to walk the red carpet and though her presentation skills are a definite ‘hit’, this dress was not.

Baby bump style: Chris Hemsworth’s wife Elsa Pataky wore a draped black style with embellished neckline to flatter her growing bump, and looked absolutely luminous beside the Thor star. Scandal star Kerry Washington only confirmed her pregnancy last night, and wore a beautiful Balenciaga gown to flatter her curves. Drew Barrymore’s dress was a world away from this understated elegance, as she opted for a very loud and colourful Monique Lhuillier number. The best-dresses bump award, however, has to go to Olivia Wilde. The gorgeous actress went for a very brave full-length, long-sleeve sequined number from Gucci and looked as lovely as we’ve ever seen her.
