Dressing for a special occasion such as a wedding can be a complete nightmare. When you need to find that perfect dress, pickings are slim and if you shop on a random day you could find five dresses you’d happily wear. Oh the things we have to put with…
There are a number of things to remember when special occasion shopping. Comfort is key as you will be wearing the outfit all day. Although those skyscraper heels are to die for, they’re not worth hobbling along and hating every minute either.
If between sizes, avoid the temptation to buy the smaller size. Yes, you will fit into it but three courses plus wedding cake later, it may prove uncomfortably tight. Weddings are fun and you want freedom to move around, dancing and chatting to people. If you’re worried about how tight your dress is and how big your bum or tummy look, we guarantee you won’t enjoy yourself half as much.
Structured dresses are still very popular with fluid lines lending definition to the figure. Chiffon dresses are a good choice too, as floaty fabrics skim over the frame distractig attention from parts we’re not so confident about. For a simple but chic outfit, add a clutch and peep toes and you’re good to go. This is a look that can work equally well for summer and winter depending on what colour you choose. Buttery yellows and hot pinks are gorgeous summer shades while berry and tan epitomise winter. Maxi dresses also look great no matter what the season, and they’re chic yet comfortable, a winning combination.
Midi length is still going strong with a wide range of dresses and skirts available. If you’re sick of death of wearing the same thing to a wedding why not change it up with a midi skirt and embellished top. Such a look may be out of your comfort zone but at least you know you won’t be caught in the same dress as another guest. Ultimate fashion fear right there…
A simple way to bring an old outfit back to live is to invest in a headpiece. As Irish women, we are extreme lucky in that regard, as there are currently multiple talented milliners creating new and exciting pieces. Mark Burke, Carol Kennelly, Martha Lynn and Edel Ramberg all have stunning pieces so make sure you investigate. A headpiece adds finesse, elegance and mystery. Put your hair in a classic chignon or French roll, slick on some red lippie and you have old Hollywood glamour. A truly gorgeous combination when paired with a modern and inventive headpiece.
