Ms Y, the asylum seeker who was denied an abortion by Irish authorities earlier this year, was held by police after fleeing to the UK to undergo the procedure.

The woman’s story made global headlines after she was forced to proceed with her pregnancy, despite telling officials that it was the result of a rape and she felt suicidal at the thought of having the baby.

According to The Irish Times, it has emerged today that the woman was held by police for more than 11 hours after being arrested for illegally entering the UK from Ireland on July 1st. The women had previously arrived in Ireland in March and is believed to have travelled by ferry to Liverpool.

A copy of her custody summary obtained by the newspaper showed that she was arrested at Birkenhead ferry port at 8.35am on July 1st and taken into custody. She had €28 and £1 in cash and told immigration services she was pregnant and wanted to harm herself. She was deemed to be at “medium” risk of self-harm and social services were contacted.

The woman’s son was delivered in Ireland on August 6th. It is not known how she travelled back to Ireland and no mention of her journey to the UK and subsequent arrest are included in reports by the HSE and Department of Justice into her care.
