Over 200 people have tonight attended a vigil to mark the second anniversary of Savita Halappanavar’s death.
Savita died at University Hospital Galway in 2012 from septic shock after presenting to the hospital with back pain. Once it had been found that Ms Halappanavar was miscarrying, she and her husband Praveen repeatedly asked for the pregnancy to be terminated but their requests were denied as a foetal heartbeat was still present.
The case led to the introduction of the Protection Of Life During Pregnancy Act but according to the Irish Times, Cathy Doherty of the Abortion Rights campaign told tonight’s gathering that the new law “makes things more complicated and dangerous”.
