Two gardaí are being treated in hospital for serious injuries following an altercation in Cork last night.
The incident occurred when a car refused to stop near the east Cork village of Killeagh shortly after midnight and a number of men attacked a garda, hitting him with a rock causing him serious eye and head injuries.
According to RTÉ, a second garda was also injured in the jaw and a garda car rammed before reinforcements were called to the scene.
The men rammed a second patrol car before attempting to enter a property and caused another standoff in which gardaí were threatened with knives, sticks and other weapons.
The four men aged 18, 22, 25, 46 and a 27-year-old woman were arrested and are currently being detained in Midleton, Cobh and Fermoy Garda Stations.
