After the freezing temperatures of the last few days, Met Éireann has said milder weather is on the way.

It was -6.5C in Mullingar last night with Cavan, Westmeath and many other parts of the country also experiencing bitterly cold conditions.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, forecaster John Eagleton said that last night marked the end of the “hard frost”.

He added “There will be a touch of it in the east tonight, but the weather is gradually improving.

“While it’s still bitterly cold in parts of the midlands, some places along the coast are now experiencing temperatures of 6-10C.”

Things are set to improve as we head into the New Year too with a “mild run” of weather.

However, there will be a risk of light rain and drizzly patches over the next few days.
