Michaella McCollum Connolly is going to be transferred from Peru to a prison in Northern Ireland, according to reports this morning.
McCollum Connolly’s Belfast solicitor, Kevin Winters, confirmed that the authorities in Peru have accepted a request for her transfer.
The Co. Tyrone native was arrested at Lima airport in August 2013 with Glasgow woman Melissa Reid attempting to smuggle €1.8 worth of cocaine in their luggage.
The pair, both 20 at the time of the arrest, pleaded guilty to the crimes in December and received a six year and eight month jail term.
Although the transfer has been granted, it is believed that it could take matter of months until the process is completed.
