A 65-year-old man has died after the car he was driving became trapped in floodwater.
The incident happened near Doogart, Achill Island around 10pm last night.
The man’s body has been taken to Mayo General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The R341 to Cleggan in Co Galway is blocked following heavy flooding and persistent rain overnight. It is understood a section of the road was washed away during the torrential downpours.
Emergency service personnel had to use ropes to make their way across the road and Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
Motorists are being advised to drive with caution.
