At the age of 15, Jennifer Mee became famous for developing an uncontrollable case of hiccups, hiccupping for five weeks straight.

Mee appeared on The Today Show a few times in 2007, discussing her hiccups and the various attempts made to cure them.

She made headlines later that year when she ran away from home but it wasn’t until 2010 – when she was arrested for murder – that Mee found herself the subject of intense media attention.

Just in case you ever wondered what causes hiccups…

According to US Today, Jennifer lured WalMart worker, 22-year old Shannon Griffin, to an abandoned house by pretending she wanted to buy marijuana.

When Shannon got there two of Mee’s friends robbed him at gunpoint but he struggled and was shot four times.

Although Mee didn’t physically shoot Griffin herself, she was guilty of planning and organising the kidnapping and burglary.

During her trial, prosecutors played a recording of a home call in which Jennifer confessed to orchestrating the whole affair.

“Because I set everything up,” Mee said during the call. “It all went wrong, Mom. It just went downhill.”

Her co-defendant, La Ron Raiford, was sentenced to life in prison. A second co-defendant, Lamont Newton, has not yet gone to trial.

Jennifer was sentenced to life in jail with no possibility of parole.
