Patrick Lyttle, the Irish man who was left in a critical condition after allegedly being punched by his brother in Sydney, has come out of a coma.

At the weekend it was reported that Barry Lyttle (33) punched his brother Patrick (31) in the Kings Cross region of the city in the early hours of Friday morning.

Patrick had to undergo emergency surgery after the incident and had been in a coma in St Vincent’s Hospital since. According to reports this morning, he has regained consciousness.

David Faktor, a spokesperson for the hospital, told Australia Associated Press that Patrick’s condition was stable but that he will be held in the Intensive Care Unit for a few more days.

He explained: “He’s conscious… He’s been taken off life-support. He’s sitting up.”

Patrick from Co Antrim had been backpacking around Australia since last year. He met Barry and their father Oliver in Sydney three days before the alleged altercation.

On Tuesday Barry was in court. He was granted bail under a set of conditions and is due back in court on January 20th.
