Former US President, Jimmy Carter, is this week calling on the government of Ireland to be a leading light in introducing legislation to prosecute sex buyers in Ireland.
Mr. Carter has addressed the issue in letters that he has written to all members of the Oireachtas, in which he urges Irish politicians to protect women and girls who are prostituted in Ireland.
Recommendations were made to the Oireachtas Justice Committee last year, where support was given to pass legislation on the topic, but Mr. Carter now says that 12 months has since passed and is calling on politicians to end the exploitation and trafficking ‘with a sense of urgency’.
Mr. Carter is urging Ireland to take the lead on this matter to inspire others to follow.
