The Daily Star has come under fire after they published a controversial headline which seemed to suggest that Madeleine McCann had been found in Ireland.

This week, a seven-year-old girl was taken from her home and put into HSE care, following a Garda operation. The girl had blonde hair and blue eyes and was removed from the family on Monday.

This was The Star’s headline:

o-MADDIE-570

This is the second time in a week that The Star has used “Maddie” in their headlines, also covering the discovery of a girl in a camp in Greece:

o-MADDIE-GREECE-570

One of the lines in the online article included:

“POLICE yesterday found a blue-eyed “Irish Maddie” at the home of a Roma gypsy family.”

DNA tests are currently being carried out to establish the identity of the young girl in Ireland. The family maintain that the girl is their daughter.
