Ecstasy And Ketamine Temporarily Legalised In Ireland Following Court Ruling

Emergency legislation is being put in place.

Ecstasy and ketamine are among 100 substances which have been legalised in Ireland following a court ruling this morning.

A ruling from the Court Of Appeal this morning means that Section 2(2) of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977, which criminalises possession of these substances, has been found unconstitutional and there is no current Irish law prohibiting the public from using the drugs.

Emergency legislation to replace the act will be tabled in the Dáil tonight but it is thought that it could take up to 37 hours before it is signed into law by President Michael D Higgins.

Cannabis, cocaine and heroin are not affected by the development and it remains illegal to possess these drugs.
