Heading down to Electric Picnic this weekend? Drivers told to be aware of adverse weather conditions

Electric Picnic weekend is here, and a warning has been shared with those drivers travelling down to Stradbally.

Met Éireann is forecasting heavy rain, blustery winds, and cooler temperatures as the remnants of Hurricane Erin hit Ireland.

Drivers have been told to expect traffic delays, challenging driving conditions, and increased road risks.

To help drivers stay safe, Ian O’Reilly, Head of Personal Line Sales at Chill, has shared essential tips for navigating both the busy roads and the adverse weather conditions:

1. Plan ahead and use official routes

Avoid relying on SatNav when approaching the festival site. Instead, Gardaí recommend using this official map: Electric Picnic 2025 Travel Map.

Please follow the dedicated routes shown on the map, as Garda resources are in place along these roads to ensure you reach Electric Picnic 2025 safely and efficiently. Be sure to follow all signage and drive slowly through busy areas to help reduce congestion and keep everyone safe.

2. Leave early and expect delays

Peak travel times will bring heavy congestion on key routes like the M7 and M8. To reduce delays and stress, aim to travel earlier in the day and stick to the officially recommended routes to the site rather than relying on shortcuts or SatNav alternatives.

3. Consider public transport

To cut road pressure and avoid parking headaches, park at Portlaoise Train Station and use the dedicated shuttle bus to the festival. This also helps reduce fatigue and keeps you safer for the journey home.

4. Never drink and drive

Garda checkpoints will be in operation throughout the weekend. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs—even the morning after—can lead to arrest, disqualification, or serious accidents. If you’ve been drinking, leave the car behind.

5. Combat driver fatigue

Long days and late nights can make post-festival driving dangerous. Take regular breaks, stay hydrated, and only drive when fully alert. If tiredness sets in, pull over somewhere safe before continuing.
