Donald Trump Backtracks On Illegal Abortion ‘Punishment’ Comments After Public Outcry

He said women should be punished if an abortion is obtained illegally. Just like in Ireland.

Donald Trump rushed to clarify some things after he made a controversial and extreme statement about illegal abortion in the United States yesterday.

He said that women who obtained abortions illegally should receive ‘some form of punishment’ if the procedure should ever be banned in the US, according to the Guardian.

He was unable to clarify whether the punishment should be a fine or a lengthy sentence in jail.

The response caused anger among pro-choice and anti-abortion groups alike.

CNN reports that three anti-abortion groups criticized his comments, stating that they do not approve of penalties for women who seek out abortions, often out of ‘desperation’.

Hillary Clinton also called his comments “horrific and telling”. Trump has been scrutinised for his less than stellar record on women’s issues.

Afterwards, Trump tried to retract his comments in a statement, stating: “The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed — like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions.”

Interestingly, in this country, the procurement of an abortion where the mother’s life is not at risk, means that the woman in question could face 14 years in prison.

Just some food for thought.
