Up to eight people have reportedly been shot after a gunman opened fire on a Cancun nightclub this morning.

Witnesses say the shots were fired outside and through a window of the Blue Parrot nightclub in Playa Del Carmen at approximately 2.45am local time on Monday morning, spraying bullets at revellers who were enjoying the last night of the BPM music festival.

While authorities have yet to confirm the number of fatalities, witnesses say that four or five people have been killed. Video shared on eyewitness social media shows people running from the venue as bodies lie in the walkways.

It is not yet known whether the attack was a terrorist act or cartel-related.

Scottish DJ Jackmaster, who had been performing at the event, tweeted

“Someone has come into the club in Playa Del Carmen and opened fire. 4-5 dead and many wounded”.

He later added:

“This is a very very sad situation. Tryna get my head around it still. Thoughts and condolences to all affected.”
