A 40-year-old licensed childcare provider has been arrested in New York following the death of a 20-month-old in her care.
Athena Skeeter told police she was “wrestling” with toddler Cardell Williamson at her Bronx home. She said she lifted the boy up by one arm and one leg and threw him on the floor, then stepped on his stomach three times but “didn’t use full force.”
After this, she out her own son on top of the boy as he lay on the hardwood floor.
Skeeter then told police how the child “acted differently after that”, saying that he threw up and “his head kept tilting”.
The woman added that she then placed the child in a bathtub and put cold water on his face. She admitted to leaving the room while the baby was in the bathtub, coming back a “short time” later. She says that his head was in the water and steam was rising when she returned.
The young boy had burns on his face when medical assistance arrived. At the time, he was lying on a bed and struggling to breathe. Officers rushed the boy to Bronx Lebanon Hospital but he was declared dead at the hospital.
The babysitter has now been arraigned on charges of manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child.
