A baby has been discovered in a storm drain in Australia, where he had lain for five days.

The seven-day-old boy is now in a serious but stable condition after he was found by passerby David Otte, who was cycling along the road with his 18-year-old daughter Hayley when they heard a strange noise.

The baby was found abandoned at the bottom of the 9ft deep pipe, which was covered with a 440lb concrete slab, and it took six men to rescue the tot.

According to the Irish Mirror, the baby was most likely pushed through a small opening to the drain and New South Wales Senior Constable Mark McAlister said the discovery was “a bit surreal actually”.

“How could someone do it? I, myself, have kids and we’re expecting a baby in a few more months so it’s not good that someone’s going through this and has done this to a little one.”

A woman has been charged with the attempted murder of the child and is due to appear in court tomorrow.
