There is a saying “a picture speaks a thousand words” and the below image says more than we ever could.
On Sunday night, Garda Tony Golden was shot dead while investigating a domestic incident in Omeath, Co.Louth.
Garda Golden was shot dead by Adrian Crevan Mackin, who had previously been charged with membership of the IRA, before turning the gun on himself.
Mackin’s girlfriend Siobhan Phillips was brought to hospital with gunshot wounds and remains in a critical condition.
Today, an estimated 4,000 retired and serving Gardaí attended Garda Golden’s funeral in Blackrock, Co Louth.
Photographer Niall Carroll took to Twitter earlier today to share this photo and it captures a sense of solidarity on a dark day for An Garda Síochána.
