Alexander Pacteau has been sentenced to a minimum of 23 years in prison for the murder of Karen Buckley.

He was handed down the mandatory life term for the murder of the Irish student and will serve at least 23 years of that before he is able to apply for parole.

Judge Lady Rae said in court: “You claim to be remorseful but you only expressed remorse for the first time when you pleaded guilty.”

Karen Buckley was murdered in April of this year.

Pacteau (21), who killed Ms Buckley after meeting her outside a Glasgow nightclub, previously pleaded guilty to the crime on April 12th.

Investigating officers believe that he killed her by striking her on the head with a heavy object in his car. He then tried to dispose of her body in a bath of caustic soda.

Ms Buckley’s father said following the sentencing:” I hope that he is never released and spends every day in prison haunted by what he did.”
