The Best Song of the 1980s has been named this week and the announcement has been greeted with a mixed reaction from fans.

Music website Pitchfork published the list which saw Prince’s Purple Rain top the poll of the best 200 songs of the decade.

In second place was Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ by Michael Jackson followed by Straight Outta Compton by NWA’s.

New Order’s Blue Monday took fourth spot while Fight the Power by Public Enemy came in fifth.

Other entries in the top ten included Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) by Kate Bush, Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division and Once in A Lifetime by Talking Heads.

Also featured were The Message by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and How Soon Is Now? by the Smiths.

Prince and Michael Jackson (again), along with The Cure, The Smiths and Sonic Youth all made the top 15.
