Ten of the Best Film Soundtracks of All Time

When you're watching a film you might not notice the music but sometimes the music makes the film. Here are our top ten film soundtracks to show you what we mean.

Rebecca McKnight

When you are watching a film you might not even notice what music is playing but the soundtrack of a film is actually very important.

In fact some films are better known for their songs than the film itself. Here are some of our favourites…

1. ‘Son of a Preacher Man’ in Pulp Fiction It would be so easy to fill up this list with songs from this soundtrack but we like to make things a little harder on ourselves. That is why we are only picking one and that one is Dusty Springfield’s oh-so-catchy ‘Son of a Preacher Man.’

2. ‘Sound of Silence’ in The Graduate – The only thing better than the film starring Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft is its soundtrack. Out of all the brilliant Simon and Garfunkel songs used in this classic, we picked the soothing tones of Sound of Silence.

3. ‘I’m Easy’ in Nashville Keith Carradine’s song is one of many great tunes from this 1975 cult film. You will want to sing this song all day long when you hear it but don’t worry the lyrics are pretty easy to remember.

4. ‘Cry to Me’ in Dirty Dancing We thought we’d avoid the obvious one and instead opt for this song by Solomon Burke which plays during the love scene between the handsome Johnny and innocent Baby. And yes Johnny we’d cry to you any day…

5. ‘Singin’ In The Rain’ in Singin’ In The Rain The title track for this 1952 musical is one of those songs that will live on in film history. If anything can get us in the mood to go dancing in the pouring rain, this can!

6. ‘I Will Always Love You’ in The Bodyguard – So it is a bit of a cheesy song but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to include it on our list. Besides we love having a good go at this Whitney Houston classic on the karaoke.

7. ‘Be Our Guest’ in Beauty and the Beast There were so many Disney films and songs we could have picked but in the end we came to the conclusion that Lumiere’s catchy number was our favourite. We know he’s a candlestick but he’s so suave and charming.

8. ‘We Go Together’ in Grease Not only is it a fantastic song but it’s one of those ones where you don’t even need to know the words. You can just sing any words you want and no one will know the difference.

9. ‘Stayin’ Alive’ in Saturday Night Fever We’ll admit it helps that John Travolta is in this hip-shaking dance film but half the battle is the great music. Also who hasn’t thrown the classic dance moves on the floor at least once in their lifetime?

10 ‘I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow’ in O Brother, Where Art Thou? This is one of those film soundtracks that doesn’t jump to mind immediately but it certainly is up there with the best. O George, where art thou? Why don’t you cometh to thee?

There are so many soundtracks that we would have loved to include on our list and we have left out some absolute gems including John Williams’ eerie theme for Jaws and Celine Dion’s epic ballad for Titanic. Think we’ll stop at the DVD store on the way home.
