It’s still his number one song…
Pogues singer Shane MacGowan insists Fairytale of New York is the No 1 Christmas song, despite a poll putting it in third place.
The 1987 classic was voted the third best festive hit of all time by Time Out magazine, narrowly beaten by Wham’s Last Christmas and the winner, Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You.
Fairytale, featuring Shane and the late Kirsty McColl, only reached number two in the UK when it was first released, after it was held off the top spot by The Pet Shop Boys’ Always On My Mind.
But Shane believes this latest poll could help the ballad’s prospects of finally topping the Christmas charts both here and in the UK.
Shane told the Irish Sun: “It’s a great song that stands the test of time and we’re very proud of it, of course we are. It’s a tribute to Kirsty’s memory that the song has lasted and continues to bring joy to people.
“Every year I get emotional when I hear Kirsty’s voice, it’s so sad she’s not still here.
“No one could have sang her part the same way she did, she hit every note perfectly and she is a major reason why Fairytale is a big part of people’s Christmases.”
And you know what? It is Shane.
