We all know that when it comes to politics, Madonna is a pop star who refuses to keep quiet – which is why we love her, in fairness. Today, Madge has voiced her support for a feminist punk band who are currently standing trial in Russia.

The Irish Independent reports that Madonna has spoken out and said that she hopes the feminist punk band Pussy Riot, who are on trial for performing a “punk prayer” against Vladimir Putin, are released soon.

Madonna spoke about the band during her tour of Russia and she stated that she fully supports freedom of speech and hopes that the judge will show leniency to the three women who are accused of insulting the Russian Orthodox Church with their song which called for the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, to be removed from power.

“I’m against censorship, so I hope that the judge is lenient with them and that they are freed soon,” said Madonna.

Two weeks before Vladimir Putin was re-elected as president in Russia, the three members of Pussy Riot, danced in Moscow’s main cathedral while performing a song which featured the lyrics: “Virgin Mary, drive Putin away!”

The three of them were arrested and have spent five months in custody on charges of hooliganism. According to reports, prosecutors have called for three-year sentences for the trio, despite the fact that various human rights groups have demanded that they be set free.
