And The Mercury Prize Winner Is….Alt-J!

The folk band beat off some big names to nab themselves the prestigious prize last night...

It’s the music award of the year.

We had our hopes on Hawley but last night proved to be Alt-J’s big night as they picked up the prestigious 2012 Barclaycard Mercury Music Award.

The four-piece folk band was awarded the prize at the event at Camden’s Roundhouse in north London.

The band claimed they had no idea they were going to win, modestly claiming they only had 8.3 per cent chance of having their names called out.

Alt-J’s drummer Thom Green told Spotify ahead of the night: “We weren’t too surprised (to be nominated), just very relieved. We’d been tipped to win before we’d even been nominated, so the pressure was on.”

And it seems they’ll be letting their hair down now they’ve received such a high honour with in the music industry.

Thom added: “We’ll get extremely drunk at an after party with our friends and family and then I’ll recover the next day listening to Radiohead’s In Rainbows and Monstar’s Harder/Bastard.”

Alt-J beat music artists Plan B, The Maccabees and Jessie Ware, as well as second favourite Richard Hawley.
