After suffering extreme back and abdominal pain last Tuesday, Katie Kropas asked her grandmother to drive her to the hospital.
The 23-year-old was in for a huge shock when doctors told her she “had a full term baby, ready to come”.
Speaking to CBS News, Katie said she was told she was pregnant at 10:15pm and she had baby daughter Ellie at 11:06 pm.
New mother Katie is bowled over by the news as she didn’t feel any pregnancy symptoms.
“I thought I had put on some Christmas season weight, but I never thought I was pregnant. Never” said the Massachusetts native.
Chairwoman of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at South Shore Hospital, Dr. Kim Dever, told CBS that the hospital has had cases like this before.
“We do about 3,500 births a year, and we probably see this a few times a year,” she said.
“It tends to happen when a woman is overweight or has irregular periods, and she may not feel much baby movement because of where the placenta is positioned, the doctor said.
“Very often, especially in your first pregnancy, you’re really not aware of what you’re feeling and we often have women joke and say they’re feeling gas pains or they can attribute it to other natural conditions,” continued Dr. Dever.
In conversation with The New York Daily News, Katie said that people have asked her how she didn’t know she was pregnant.
“I don’t know why I didn’t know. I mean, I’m just excited and I appreciate everyone who is helping” she said.
