Take special care when you are heading to the parade this year, as you could be in with a chance of meeting the man of your dreams.

Well, that seems to be the general consensus anyway, as 70 per cent of singles who took part in a recent survey confirmed that they thought they could meet a long-term partner during the St Patrick’s Day celebrations. Research carried out by Irish dating website Elite Singles found that while 65 per cent said that the country is over-reliant on alcohol when it comes to dating, just 14 per cent believed that a Paddy’s Day hook-up was more likely to be a one-night affair.

Sixty per cent of respondents said that the stereotype of a heavy-drinking Irish person was “accurate and embarrassing” but it turns out we are also a nation of romantics, with 85 per cent of singles happy to date instead of spending the night in the pub celebrating.

Only three per cent of those questioned said that, if in a relationship, they would ditch their other half in favour of a St Patrick’s Day with friends, with 30 per cent preferring to spend the holiday as a couple and 58 per cent choosing to celebrate with both a partner and friends.
