Ikea has had to remove a number of batches of almond cake after Coliform bacteria were found in them.
The products, which were made in Sweden, contained the common bacteria which are found in soil and water as well as faeces. Coliform normally don’t cause illness but can be a sign of more harmful bacteria including E Coli.
In a statement the furniture giants said that this was not the case: “The production batches have, as per safety and quality routines, been tested for bacteria that can cause health issues, such as E Coli, and none of these pathogen bacteria have been found.”
They added: “However, since the product does not comply with our strict food quality standards we have decided to withdraw the concerned production batches from sale in the 23 affected countries.”
According to reports the cakes have been withdrawn from 23 countries and there has been no evidence of contamination in cakes sold in the UK or Ireland.
Ikea recently had to withdraw meatball and sausage products from their stores following the horsemeat scandal.
Ikea also had to withdraw a number of meat products.
