Christmas shoppers were brought to a standstill along the quays in Dublin on Monday, as members of the public bravely tried to save a man from the River Liffey.
A large crowd gathered near Dublin’s Ha’penny Bridge and Millennium Bridge as a number of people tried to rescue the man at approximately 2pm on Monday afternoon. A number of attempts were made to throw life buoys to the man.

It is understood the man became stuck in the river and grabbed on to something under the boardwalk in order to keep his head out of the water.
Emergency services were called to the scene, before a fireman braved the icy waters and brought the man to safety.
The man was reportedly taken to the Mater Hospital for treatment.
