Do you habour dreams of becoming a Twitter celebrity? If so, pay attention because a new study has revealed the winning formula for racking in the followers.

Researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology have revealed that Twitter users who post positive, easy-to-read messages that contain news and other factual info usually have far more followers than people who post grumpy, self-centred tweets.

In order to come to this conclusion, the researchers studied half-a-million tweets posted by more than 500 Twitter users.

Positive tweets are likely to attract more followers than grumpy ones

“Followers are Twitter’s most basic currency, yet little is understood about how to grow such an audience,” said Eric Gilbert, one of the researchers.

“By examining multiple factors that affect tie formation and dissolution over time on Twitter, we’ve discovered information that could help technologists design and build tools that help users grow their audiences,” he added.

So aside from sharing news and being a positive tweeter, what else can you do to up your popularity on the site?

According to the boffins, you should try and interact with your followers more, use less hashtags and make sure your spelling is perfect and your tweets are easy to read.
