The LEO Zoological Conservation Center in Greenwich, Connecticut celebrated the birth of a healthy, female giraffe last week.
The calf’s mother, 6-year-old endangered Rothschild giraffe Petal, had a short labour and proceeded to bathe the newborn, a sign of love and affection.
But, the calf was already craving independence. After a mere 30 minutes, she was standing and nursing. The crew at the conservation centre recorded the baby giraffe’s first attempts to stand up.
The calf is the first to be born at the facility and possibly the first in Connecticut’s history.
