A student faces first-degree assault charges after allegedly stabbing another student on their university campus and uploading an image of his bloodied hands to Snapchat.

According to WMUR, Matthew Gibbons and Eric Denning from the University of New Hampshire were arrested after police were shown a Snapchat screengrab of a man holding a knife with bloodied hands and a disturbing caption allegedly referring to the stabbing.

The victim was a 21-year old male, Dean Skelley, who was hospitalised.

A third student stepped forward with a screengrab, naming Gibbons and Denning as the people in the Snapchat story screenshot.

Gibbons now faces a first-degree assault charge, and posted $100,000 bail, while Denning faces a second-degree assault and criminal liability charges. He was later released into a community corrections programme.

It is reported that Skelley remains in hospital, but it in a stable condition.

The University of New Hampshire are now launching their own internal investigation.
