What a rollercoaster of a day.
From the highs of Ireland’s fantastic win over France in the Rugby World Cup came the hugely-anticipated clash between the Republic of Ireland and Poland.
However, while the rugby brought us to dizzying heights of celebration, the football certainly didn’t live up to expectation or indeed, the jubilation of last Thursday night’s win over Germany as Ireland fell to a 2-1 defeat.

Walters scores a penalty for Ireland.
It was a game that saw two goals within the first 15 minutes, while Ireland were dealt a double blow later in the game as Shane Long had to leave the pitch due to injury and the lads in green later finished the game with ten men after John O’Shea picked up a red card for a second bookable offence.
Despite Ireland’s best efforts, it was Poland’s star Lewandowski that was ultimately the difference between the two teams on the day.
Now, the boys in green will have to regroup, and here’s what Twitter had to say about it all.
Poland were really there for the taking in the second half. Opportunity lost…….#IREvPOL

Utterly worn out from screaming at the tv for #IREvFRA and #IREvPOL. Thank Heaven for ITV+1 and #DowntonAbbey to finish Sunday calmly. — Eileen Wall (@themilly67) October 11, 2015
#IREvPOL I think most of the nation’s magic fairy dust was used up by the Rugby event earlier.. in fairness we got as much as we deserved.

Think most people would have taken a play off spot at the start of the campaign. Well done to the lads for getting this far. #IREvPOL — Ciarán Garrett (@Ciaran_Garrett) October 11, 2015
Such a poor result – Ireland didn’t show up tonight, played like they’re already through – not optimistic for the playoff!! #IREvPOL

Lewandowski was the difference in the end, onto the playoffs #IREvPOL #COYBIG — Patrick Hayes (@phayes86) October 11, 2015
Just had to take the difficult route in #COYBIG #IREvPOL

Disappointing result in Poland. Oh well, it was too much to hope we’d win the rugby and soccer on the same day!!! #IREvPOL — Annette R (@Annette_R1) October 11, 2015
Great effort from the team but we lack that little spark upfront. Route one worked v Germany but you can’t rely on it #IREvPOL
