Save money and do some good for the world around you by using simple measures to conserve energy in the home. If you’re not sure where to start – don’t worry! We’ll be bringing you one great energy-saving tip every day for the next month.

20. Invest in some good curtains/blinds

Are your curtains simply for decorative purposes or do you actually use them? Aside from simply helping a room ‘come together’ curtains and blinds are a simple yet effective way to lower your energy costs and to help the environment.

How can you use them to help you cut costs? Well, it’s pretty simple. During the day, take advantage of the natural warmth of the sun and keep curtains and blinds open so the sunlight can heat up the rooms of your house rather than resorting to central heating.

At night time, draw your curtains. This will help to keep the cold air out and to insulate your house. The curtains will actually help to incubate your home, meaning that if you have a fire lit or the central heating on, your curtains will detain the heat in your home for a longer period of time.

This means that you’ll definitely get more bang for your buck when it comes to using central heating or putting fuel on the fire.
