Twelve Things You’ll Remember From Going To The Gaeltacht

SO many memories.

Cathy Donohue

A summer stint at the Gaeltacht is pretty much standard during secondary school and there are some memories that really stand out.

Whether you went on a once-off trip or heading to Irish college was a regular thing, you’ll definitely recognise a few of the below.

The Céili

The highlight of the Gaeltacht social calendar. You might not have a clue how to master Irish dancing but everyone’s in the same boat and the craic is always ninety. Plus, there’s the added bonus of seeing your crush *insert love-heart emoji here*

Lost In Translation

Different counties have different slang words (half the Her team don’t know what a scut is and the other half can’t get over this) and this gets very complicated at the Gaeltacht. When someone says “meet my friend”, how are you meant to know that this means… shift/score/get with – CONFUSING.

The Bean an Tí

Although she may rule with an iron fist, the lady of the house has a heart of gold really. As long as you make sure to compliment her cooking and abide by the (many) house rules, you’re on to a winner.

Family Time

Although you might fight like cats and dogs at home, having your family visit you at the Gaeltacht is pretty much the best thing ever. They come bearing gifts (phone credit and contraband treats that the Bean an Tí doesn’t approve of) and bring you out for dinner. Winning.

Pen to Paper

You get ridiculously excited about sending a postcard home. Okay, so you might not be THAT far from home but still there’s something lovely about sending and receiving post.

On Repeat

Getting to grips with traditional Irish tunes is a big part of Gaeltacht life and there are some songs you’ll never forget the words to. Trasna na dTonnta and Tír na nÓg might sound familiar…

What to wear

Three weeks is a long time and there’s only so many new outfit combinations you can come up with. The great thing about this is you’re sharing a room with other girls meaning there’s endless opportunities for outfit swaps.

Stage fright

Having to get involved in a mini play or a ‘scoraiocht’ can be a little stressful. Public speaking and mastering the Irish language can be tough, particularly when it’s front of a crowd of people you don’t know.

There’s always one…

There has to be a “meeting place” where everyone congregates in the evening and chances are you’ll be very familiar with one particular classroom or bike shed before the summer is out.

You’ll get a “colour”

Whether you end up with a lovely sun-kissed glow or a classic case of Irish sunburn, you can guarantee you’ll make the most of the good weather during a spell at Irish college.

Love’s young dream

You develop a ridiculous crush on someone and completely freak out if you’re in the same room as them. As for attempting a conversation? Can’t. Cope.

 Opening hours

The local shop/bank/pharmacy has strict opening and closing hours so if you miss this window, you’re in trouble. Zero craic when you’re down to your last euro.
