It’s the staple of every clean-eating, fitness fanatic diet, but prices of the latest avocado fad could be about to sky-rocket.
Thanks to an increase in popularity, it seems the avocados popularity means demands for the salad staple could see production plummet by 30% this year.
According to The Grocer magazine, avocados have become a more ‘mainstream’ item on the grocery list – with exports to the UK up 58% this year alone.
As with all cases of supply and demand, it seems suppliers just can’t keep up with our snacking habits.
Food buyer Sandra Kajda told the magazine that the greatest concern for the increasing price of avocados comes from the adverse weather conditions.
While Mediterranean producers expect production to plummet by 30% this year, Peru’s recent access to the Chinese market could see a further price hike.
Avocado production is expected to double by 2020, with global demand dictating a growth from 20,000 tonnes to 40,000 tonnes. Peru alone has tripled its avocado production since 2010.
