You might have seen a wave of engagement photos spring up online over Christmas, but it seems if you have a number of weddings to attend this year, you might want to start saving.

A new survey from weddingsonline has indicated that the most requested wedding gift for Irish couples isn’t that toaster or iron.

Instead, 77 per cent of couples are now telling their guests they would prefer cash to gifts when tying the knot.

Whether that’s to splash out on the honeymoon, cover some bills, or just as a nest egg, the new trend is to open a wedding fund account where people can leave their wrapping paper at home and celebrate your union with an online transfer.

It might have something to do with the mounting cost on budgeting for your big day, with 28 per cent of couples admitting to taking out a loan to cover the cost of their wedding, while 22 per cent share the costs with their parents.

With an Irish wedding costing on average €22, 531, if you’ve recently put a ring on it, it might be worth starting your own savings fund now.
