An artist who has gained popularity for creating a new set of emojis is facing serious trouble – after depicting the Egyptian president in his work.
Artist Safie Eddeen has created a series of emojis imitating President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, using different expressions (and even a pair of devil horns) to accompany quotes from the president’s speeches.
The emojis have since been uploaded, liked and shared thousands of times on Facebook, featuring captions most ridiculed from the president’s speeches.
These include the caption: “Don’t you know you are the light of our eyes?” below a smiley Sisi wearing black sunglasses, while another emoji showed Sisi crying with laughter, using the hashtag “Egypt rejoices” as a caption.
Both captions were taken from campaigns the President launched, which were mocked as propaganda tools by social media users.
While it might seem like harmless fun, according to i100, Eddeen’s Facebook page has since been deleted in a warning to stop teasing the presidency.
The warning comes just a month after a law student was jailed for posting an image of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi with Mickey Mouse ears.
Reports have also since suggested that residents in Cairo were forced to undergo security searches, where authorities searched their homes and inspected their Facebook accounts.
