He told The Mirror: “It’s about time really. Doreen keeps me young and I can definitely say we’re going to spend the rest of our lives together.”

His other half added: “I wasn’t a blushing bride, but I was a bit giddy. It was such a lovely day – and great to see everybody.”

George and Doreen have been together for 27 years.

The pair met in 1988 through an organisation which helps mature people find friends. At the time, he had just gotten divorced while she was recently widowed.

It wasn’t long before they set up home together but it was only on Valentine’s Day this year that he decided to pop the question.

Together they have seven children, 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren
