Katy Perry has also come out on top in this year’s awards with four nominations.
Katy will fight it out with Rihanna for Video of The Year with Wide Awake.
Boyband One Direction have been nominated for Best Pop Video for their tune What Makes You Beautiful and will battle it out with teen heartthrob Justin Beiber for the gong.
Rapper Drake has been nominated in categories including Best Hip Hop Video, Best Male Video, Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.
The ceremony will be held on September 7 in Los Angeles and will feature four time VMA winner Alicia Keys who will debut a new song at the event.
She said: “Debuting a new song at the VMAs is definitely special. I debuted No One at the VMAs – it was the first time anyone in the world heard No One. It’s the perfect setting. It’s the right energy. It’s the right vibe.
“People are so excited about the night of music and hearing different styles that it just goes over really well. I can’t wait,” she said.
