The gypsy wedding is off!

Channel 4 have announced they are axing its top rating series ‘My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding’, due to a “creative decision”.

Station boss Jay Hunt hinted the show had run out of steam and will end with six stand-alone Gypsy specials next year.

The hit television series drew huge audiences of nearly nine million when it launched, the station’s biggest since ‘Big Brother’.

Revealing her decision to end the show, Jay told the Irish Daily Mirror; “We have quite naturally got to a point where we are thinking differently about the franchise.

“There will be more Gypsy Weddings next year, we are doing some specials but not another series.

“Entirely for creative reasons it is important to know when to draw the line and I think we’re close to drawing it. There comes a point when you have to move on.”

The specials’ subjects have not yet been revealed but fans will expect to see a return of Paddy Doherty, ‘King of the Travellers’, the Irish traveller and bare-knuckle boxer who went on to win ‘Celebrity Big Brother’.

The show’s second series launched in February of this year. It was surrounded by a controversial marketing campaign using the slogan ‘Bigger, Fatter, Gypsier’. The series still pulled audiences of more than six million.

Audiences were amazed by the huge dresses favoured the gypsy brides and the ‘grabbing’ phenomenon, where the boys grapple with the girls before they allow for a kiss.

The honest insight into the travelling community also shocked television audiences when they realised how young the community’s girls left school, sometimes barely literate.

A Channel 4 spokesman said; “It’s not about ratings, it’s a creative decision.”
