A teenager who quit his job after being sent a series of abusive texts from his ‘bully’ boss has publicly shamed his manager online.
Student Declan McCurdie took a part-time job in Subway working under shop manager Kenny Thomson in Ayr, Scotland, when he started receiving the texts.
The 17-year old, who stored all the messages as proof, said the abuse started with a jibe about his weight and beard:
‘Brilliant reply. You are now part of the team with that text. We love you already. Ha. Lose the silly beard thing, it’s Bum fluff! The weight will drop soon. Wait til a proper Saturday shift.’
The abusive messages continued, including:
‘Out of gratitude to your lovely Dad I have given you a month. As of next shift I expect much more from you.’
‘You’ve already cost me a month in wages for being slow and non learning. From now on I want more from you.’
‘I am building the next best team subway have ever known. I want to be a part of it but cant keep paying money for poor staff. It’s up to you bigboy. Leave now or put a shift in from now on. I pay you well.’
‘Do not answer back. You are a child, we are trying to make you a man.’
Finally frustrated by the constant bullying, McCurdie decided to send the following message before shaming his boss online with his vile behaviour:
‘You are a bully Kenny, you clearly have no people skills. I have repeatedly put up with your immature and abusive texts.
‘I have remained calm and continuously tried to improve myself to you. I have logged every single text you have sent me from the start and I’m going to take this further.
‘I will be expecting to be paid for what I am owed (45 hours) at the end of the month. My uniform will be handed in tomorrow morning. Thanks for giving me the opportunity but you have done me more damage than good.’
Speaking to The Independent, McCurdie said:
“I’m studying hospitality at college and this was my first job so I have been left pretty upset by the way the whole thing went. I was new and so I had to learn but Kenny just turned out to be a complete bully.
“Since the texts have been on the internet I have had emails from people around the world congratulating me for eventually standing up for myself.”
Responding to the criticism, Subway UK and Ireland released the following statement online:
‘We are looking into this employment matter as a priority and we will be taking appropriate action following an investigation.’
