Carol will find a lump in her breast and after she visits her doctor she is referred to a specialist and the story will continue into the new year.

Carol and David have been getting closer since his recent return to Albert Square

And the BBC soap’s executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins added: ‘EastEnders has a long tradition of dealing with social issues and breast cancer is one that the majority of people have been affected by in some way. And this is not just a story about breast cancer.

‘This is a story about women, about mothers and daughters, and ultimately about family. And with Lindsey Coulson, Michael French, and Natalie Cassidy giving powerhouse performances at its centre, this is a storyline that will inform, move, and shake up the audience as it shakes up the Jackson family.’

Carol’s ex-partner David Wicks, has recently returned to the soap and is trying to win her back even though she is a new relationship with Masood Ahmed (Nitin Ganatra).

EastEnders producers have worked closely with breast cancer experts and charities, including Macmillan Cancer Support, whilst researching this storyline to accurately raise awareness of such a sensitive subject.

The soap previously highlighted breast cancer when Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor)had a mastectomy several years ago after she was also diagnosed with the disease.
