If you’re a child of the 80s you’ll be fairly sad to hear this news. Ladies Lucille Bliss, the original voice of Smurfette from The Smurfs has sadly passed away.

The New York Times reports that Lucille, who voiced the famous little blue lady, passed away earlier this month in California at the grand old age of 96.

Lucille made it big as a voice-over actress back in the 40s when she became the voice of the cartoon character Crusader Rabbit. The cartoon was the first animated series produced specifically for television.

In 1950 she voiced the character of Anastasia, the daughter of the wicked stepmother in the Disney film Cinderella. She also had parts on The Flintstones and in various other cartoons. But her most famous character was, and always will be, Smurfette.

Lucille starred in various cartoons over the years, but is known for her role on The Smurfs

“Smurfette felt so real to me because I created her voice so I could feel her emotions,” said Lucille, speaking to Animation magazine in 2005.

“It may sound strange, but it’s true. We have to think like the character and it takes over,” she added.

We think Lucille was a voice of a generation and though The Smurfs may not be on our television screens any longer, we still remember the joy the cartoon gave us as children.
