Road Trip? Here’s Seven Of Ireland’s Best Beaches

Fancy a road-trip?

Cathy Donohue

If you went out last night to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, you might be feeling a little fragile today.

One way to blow the cobwebs off is head for a brisk walk on the beach, it might seem like a mammoth task at the time but we guarantee you’ll feel miles better afterwards.

Here are some of our favourite Irish beach destinations.

Derrynane, Caherdaniel, Co Kerry

Derrynane is one of those untouched lovely spots that you’ll only find in Ireland. This secluded bay is situated near the village of Caherdaniel and believe us when we tell you, it’s a very special find.

Fanore, Co Clare

Near Ballyvaughan, Fanore is very popular with locals and tourists alike. The breaking waves mean that surfers and those flying kites often travel here for the day.

One member of Team Her is a huge fan and makes it her business to visit this spot whenever she can.

Benone Strand, Co Derry

Think seven miles of golden sand and you have a pretty clear picture of the delightful Benone Strand. Not only is it a stunning beach, the cliff views and mountain backdrop ensure breath-taking scenery.

No rocks, shingle or seaweed mean this is a dream and there’s even a playground so children are sure to enjoy a trip to Benone.

Portmarnock, Co Dublin

Although our capital city is associated with bustling streets and hectic crowds, there are a few hidden gems.

Both Dún Laoghaire pier and Howth Harbour are often raved about but we’re very partial to a trip to Portmarnock.

‘The Velvet Strand’ conjures up images of soft sand and vivid blue waves… you won’t be disappointed.

Strandhill, Co Sligo

The coastal village of Strandhill is a popular spot for holiday-makers and there are a number of accommodation options when it comes to a staycation here.

This is another popular spot for surfers and the Warrior’s Run, an annual 15k, is another reason to visit.

Old Head Beach, Co Mayo

Old Head is a sheltered beach surrounded by cliffs and woodland.

A picturesque spot located 16km from Westport, you might even find time to take in a trip up Croagh Patrick while you’re here.

 Inchydoney, Clonakilty, Co Cork

Clonakilty has a reputation for beautiful sandy beaches and once you’ve taken a trip to Inchydoney, you’ll see why people rave about them.

It is a very popular spot for water sports but there’s a lot to be said for simply sitting down and taking in the view.

*Honorary mention for Inch Beach (cover photo), it might be a beach you’ve heard about more than a few times but that’s because it’s pretty beautiful.
