Ladies, you might want to put your flapper dresses back in your wardrobe for the foreseeable future because we have some bad news.

The release of Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby has been pushed back to summer 2013. Yes, we know. We’re pretty disappointed here in the Her.ie offices.

The Irish Independent reports that the film was originally supposed to be released on Christmas Day in the United States and St Stephen’s Day in Ireland, however Warner Brothers has released a statement which says that the company is pushing the release date back in order to ensure that the film “reaches the largest audience possible.”

Why are they doing this? Well according to reports on the internet, the original Christmas release date would coincide with the release of expected box office hits Les Miserables and the first instalment of The Hobbit trilogy.

Instead, The Great Gatsby will now being doing battle with Iron Man 3, Star Trek 2 and the new Superman film Man of Steel next summer.

Leonardo DiCapro will star in The Great Gatsby.

The change in date means that the film will officially be out of the running for next year’s Oscar’s and it also means that the movie is less likely to be a contender for any awards in 2014, as it is being released too early.

However, the delay means that Baz will get the chance to finish the insane 3D effects he has planned and get to work on making a star-studded soundtrack to accompany the film.

“Based on what we’ve seen, Baz Luhrmann’s incredible work is all we anticipated and so much more. It truly brings Fitzgerald’s American classic to life in a completely immersive, visually stunning and exciting way. We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it,” said Dan Fellman, Warner Brothers’ president of domestic distribution.

That’s all well and good, but it means we’ll have to wait for ages  and we were really, really, REALLY looking forward to seeing it. Sad face.
