Everyone knows that when you’re trying to be good and eat healthily, things like timing and preparation can be the little glitch to keep you from eating vegetables to ordering pizza.
So we’re sure we’re not the only ones who pick up a bag of ready to eat salad and trust it’s packed full of goodness.
But if you’re more like to pass the salad from the bag to the plate without running it under water, you might want to read this…
According to a new book, you really need to start running that bag of pre-chopped salad under the tap before you munch on those leaves.
In a new book Swallow This: Serving Up The Food Industry’s Darkest Secrets, author Joanna Blythman claims that ‘ready to eat’ salads are washed in water treated with high doses of chlorine and fruit acides to kill germs and inhabit bacterial growth. The author also suggests that the salad could be resting in this water for up to eight hours before packing.
So what’s the safest way to consume pre-packed salads?
Well according to food experts, unless the label states that the leaves have been washed in spring water, there will have been chemicals added during the washing process by the manufacturer.
Or you could just take a few extra mins to prepare your food by either chopping up those raw ingredients yourself, or washing your pre-packed food thoroughly.
