The Petitions Committee is meeting today to discuss a heap of requests, including putting Conor McGregor’s face on the €1 coin (and my petition to lower the price of Freddos, obviously).
While McGregor’s achievements are monumental and shouldn’t be overlooked, I feel there are many unsung Irish heroes that also deserve to be the face of the Irish €1 coin.
Billy Roll
This delightful, but also questionable meat has brought sustenance and happiness to Irish children since the beginning of time. Let us treasure it forever and laugh at the irony of using a Billy Roll Euro coin to purchase Billy Roll.
A Morbeg
Morbegs are the unofficial patron saints of Ireland and deservedly so. They have taught us so much and asked for so little in return. Make it so, Petitions Committee, make it so.
Maura Derrane
She’s the nation’s sweetheart, so it makes perfect cents for her to be the face of Ireland’s €1 coin. She’s got the looks, the personality and the economic savvy to make this a suitable role. Maura that please.
Katie Taylor’s Right Arm
Perhaps the most famous limb in Ireland, there’s little argument against putting Katie Taylor’s right arm on our nation’s Euro coin. Added bonus: carrying bundles of these coins will result in having similarly toned arms like Katie’s. #Armspiration.
Bosco
Very little explanation required here. Bosco is an adorable gender fluid angel that made all of our childhoods full to the brim with delight. The epitome of gone, but never forgotten, lies in making Bosco the face of our €1 coins.
Donal Skehan’s Magnificent Fringe
The king of the kitchen is also the king of fringes. It’s unnatural how perfect he manages to get that tuft of hair on a daily basis. He deserves admiration, respect and a well-earned place on a Euro coin.
